Carousel of Progress Brings Back Its Daughter’s Voice. Debi Derryberry Plays the Grandmother Now

Debi Derryberry spent three decades as Patricia, the daughter in Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. When the reimagined show opens at Magic Kingdom next spring, she’ll be the family’s Grandmother, beside new parents voiced by Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston.

Walt Disney Imagineering shared the casting on October 4, alongside photos of Derryberry back in a recording booth. The reveal came during “55 Magical Years of Storytelling,” a D23 event held for Walt Disney World’s 55th anniversary, where Imagineers and the Walt Disney Archives walked guests through the attraction’s history.

“A familiar voice is returning to Carousel of Progress,” Imagineering wrote. “Debi Derryberry, who previously voiced Patricia (Daughter), is taking on a new role as Grandmother next year at Walt Disney World.”

From the daughter to the grandmother

Derryberry joined the show for the version that reopened in November 1994, when the attraction got a new voice cast and returned to its original theme song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” Outside the parks she’s best known as the voice of Jimmy Neutron.

Her new role puts the same performer in two generations of the same fictional family. BlogMickey put it neatly: “the same performer will voice a different generation of the same family.”

It also made a few longtime fans feel their age. Disney Tourist Blog admitted to a double take: “I cannot possibly be the only one to do a double-take when learning that Derryberry is voicing the grandmother as opposed to mother or aunt or whatever other younger role might be available.”

Disney hasn’t said which scenes Grandmother speaks in. Concept art shown to the media for the New Year’s Eve 1999 act shows her ringing in the new millennium with Grandpa, then quietly switching the channel to wrestling once he dozes off, according to BlogMickey and Disney Tourist Blog. She also appears in concept art for the finale.

A role with a long line of voices

The Carousel family has always been a voice actor’s showcase. In the 1994 cast, the Grandmother was voiced by Mary Cervantes, with Janet Waldo, the voice of Judy Jetson, taking the part in the final act. Mel Blanc was Uncle Orville, splashing in the bathtub. Rex Allen, the singing cowboy who voiced the father when the show first ran at Disneyland, came back as Grandfather.

Derryberry now steps into a part Waldo once played. For a show that has run through so many decades, it’s a fitting way to pass the role along.

The father has been the show’s narrator since the start. Jean Shepherd, the writer and radio storyteller, voiced John in 1994. In 2027 that job goes to Cranston, with Curtis as Sarah.

Disney announced the pair at D23 in August. “It’s a great big, beautiful tomorrow for Disney Legend Jamie Lee Curtis and Emmy-winning Bryan Cranston,” the Disney Parks Blog wrote at the time.

What the new show will sound like

The attraction closed in July for its biggest rewrite yet. The old acts set in the 1900s, 1920s and 1940s are gone. A new opening features an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney himself, inspired by his 1964 television special, and Laughing Place reports an animatronic toucan will chat with him in that scene.

Then the family moves through summer 1969, gathered around the TV for the moon landing; Halloween night 1985, where Sarah takes center stage for the first time; New Year’s Eve 1999; and a retro-futuristic finale. The theme song, Uncle Orville’s bathtub gag and the core family all stay.

The 1985 act is the one Disney has shown in full concept art so far: a wood-panelled kitchen with a wall phone and a microwave, John on the porch with a bowl of candy, Orville in a pink bathtub next door, and a jack-o’-lantern by the screen door. Laughing Place notes the classic pumpkin head will be back.

Fans will be listening hard. Each act is built around dialogue, and the show turns the audience from scene to scene while the family talks. With new decades and two famous lead voices, a familiar voice in the cast gives regulars something to hold on to.

Why a returning voice matters

Theme park voice work is a long game. A performer can record a role in an afternoon and be heard by guests for thirty years, as Derryberry was. Bringing her back tells fans the new show isn’t wiping out the old one.

That’s how Disney Tourist Blog read it. It called the casting “another signal that the project team understands the stakes of this overhaul, and is putting great care and attention into getting it right,” and said the move “drives home” that the team “gets it.”

Laughing Place called Derryberry’s casting “the biggest reveal” of the evening, ahead of the toucan and the pumpkin head.

When guests will hear her

Disney is aiming for late spring 2027, with no exact date yet. Disney Tourist Blog thinks that’s tight. It suggests “interpreting ‘late Spring 2027’ as ‘by Memorial Day’ as opposed to sometime towards the tail end of Spring Break,” and wouldn’t be surprised if it slips past that.

Whenever the theater starts turning again, guests who heard Patricia as kids may notice something. The daughter grew up. She’s the grandmother now.
