Angry Birds Movie Announces an All-Star Voice Cast

Can the movie version of the hit game Angry Birds measure up?

Rovio Entertainment and Sony Pictures Imageworks are making sure it will.  Venturing beyond the app game and cartoon series, Rovio announced their full length 3D movie’s stellar cast headed by Jason Sudeikis who will be voicing the Red Bird; Josh Gad, who recently enjoyed much success for voicing Olaf in Frozen, will be playing the character Chuck the Yellow Bird; and Peter Dinklage will be stepping away for the meantime from his run-away hit character Tyrion Lannister of Game of Thrones to play the Mighty Eagle.

They will be joined by other top stars like SNL breakout comedienne Kate McKinnon, Arrested Development’s Tony Hale, voice actor and comedian Ike Barinholtz of The Mindy Project, Keegan-Michael Key of Key & Peele, Danielle Brooks of Orange Is the New Black, online comedy-duo hit Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla), voice actor and stand-up comedian Danny McBride plays Bomb the Black Bird and of course Maya Rudolph voicing the White Bird.  The cast is not complete without the mean, green, big bad pigs – voice actor and comedian Bill Hader will be playing one.

Producer John Cohen shared in a release, “I’m extremely proud of this cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent – these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re thrilled to have them all on board.”

Though news of the story line has not been shared by the producers, it seems that this Saturday Night Live star filled animated film is promising their bird-throwing loving fans one laugh-out-loud time in the movies.

Despite recent news of the decline in download of the game app and cutting of workforce, the movie announcement and cast release coincided with Angry Bird’s celebration of their 1 billion-flung milestone.  The film is set for release on 1st of July 1, 2016 and will be directed by Fergal Reilly of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Clay Kaytis of Frozen.  Jon Vitti of The Simpsons wrote the screenplay.

Will this movie announcement draw interest back to the strategy game?  Will this comedic powerhouse voice cast enough to make it a top-grosser?
