Overgeared Gets a Same-Day English Dub. Ricco Fajardo, Morgan Lauré and Fans React

Overgeared, the anime of the Korean webtoon about a broke gamer who turns into a legendary blacksmith, arrived on Crunchyroll on Sunday with its English dub streaming the same day as the subtitled version. Ricco Fajardo voices Grid, Emily Fajardo directs, and the cast and fans have spent the past few days celebrating a dub that didn’t make anyone wait.

Same-day dubs are still rare in anime. Most English versions land a week or more after the Japanese episode, because a dub team can’t start until the finished picture and the translated script reach them. Overgeared skipped the wait, and for the actors in the booth that means working very close to the wire.

Sub and dub, same Sunday

Crunchyroll announced the dub on Friday, September 25. “The English dub of Overgeared will begin streaming on Crunchyroll alongside the Japanese version on Sunday, September 27,” its news site said.

The fan news account Anime Dub Updates (animedubupdates) put the time at 8:30 a.m. Pacific, “alongside the English Sub.” The show is Tempal: Item no Chikara (Tempal ~The Power of Items~) in Japan, adapted from REDICE STUDIO’s webtoon, which is itself based on a web novel by Sae Nal Park.

Anime News Network lists the Japanese TV premiere on Tokyo MX and BS11 on October 2 at 11:30 p.m., so Crunchyroll’s Sunday release came ahead of the broadcast. U.S. audiences got an even earlier look: Crunchyroll screened the show in theaters on September 21 as part of its Anime Nights program.

The story is very gamer: broke, written-off Youngwoo Shin plays a mediocre warrior called Grid in the virtual reality game Satisfy, until a legendary blacksmith’s lost knowledge lets him craft god-tier gear.

Who’s in the booth

The episode 1 cast is led by Ricco Fajardo as Grid, Alexis Tipton as Irene, Morgan Lauré as Yura, Bradley Gareth as Doran, Daniel Van Thomas as Ashur and Reshel Mae as Seira. Trina Nishimura, John Burgmeier, Jim Foronda, Corey Pettit and Catherine DuBord are also in the credits, with eight more actors on additional voices.

Behind the glass, Emily Fajardo is the voice director. Her Instagram bio describes her as “Voice Director @Crunchyroll.” Zach Bolton produces, Jared Smith adapts the script under adaptation supervisor Tyler Walker, and Rickey Watkins mixes.

In Japan, Ayako Kōno directs at J.C.Staff with EGG FIRM producing, Kenta Ihara writes the series scripts and Yoshiaki Fujisawa composes the music, according to Crunchyroll News.

What a same-day dub asks of the team

Ricco Fajardo has talked about exactly this. At Anime NYC in 2022, asked why same-day dubs weren’t more common, he said the whole thing depends on when the dub team gets the materials. “If we have the materials at the same time, easy,” he said.

The hard part is when they don’t. “So we get those things like literally when it’s about to go live within a few hours and we get an animation change,” he told The Natural Aristocrat. He described teams told the materials hadn’t come from Japan yet, “just waiting for an email until 5:55” with the day ending at six, and the chain of people involved: “they would adapt the script, we would then perform the script.”

That chain is the translator, the adapter who rewrites the lines to fit the mouth flaps, the director, the actors and the engineers, all working to one deadline. Fajardo’s view was that it only happens when everyone cares: “a lot of moving parts and a lot of people that have to care about what the project is for it to happen to be SimulDubbed.”

Writing about simuldubs in 2022, Trent Cannon of Rice Digital put the actor’s side plainly: “Actors are brought in to record their part and are often handed the script as they walk into the booth.”

Nobody on the Overgeared team has said publicly when they got the episode or how long they had. Crunchyroll’s crew list does show the size of the operation behind one episode, from talent coordinators to three assistant engineers.

Morgan Lauré on playing Yura

Morgan Lauré announced her role on Instagram on Monday. “i’m the English voice of YURA, the Blood Witch, in Overgeared!!!” she wrote, describing Yura as “powerful, intimidating, and looks like she has never once asked a room for permission to speak. i love her already.”

She thanked her director by name: “love you @emilyjfajardo – being in your booth is the best because I can 10000% be myself, all the messy and ADHD.” Here’s the post.

Some fans had already worked it out. “The moment I heard her voice I went no freaking way… It’s Morgan Laure oh hell yeah I’m watching more!” wrote chaosleo815. The account 950clubpodcast agreed: “I knew that voice sounded familiar. Congratulations!!!”

What fans are saying

Under Crunchyroll’s own announcement on Instagram, the mood was loud and happy. “LETS GOOO! Ricco Fajardo as Grid is such perfect casting. Dub AND sub on day one? We are eating good this season,” wrote yuki.ai.anime_. The account madeleinenorton called it “an absolutely STELLAR cast,” and mark_hawx kept it short on the Anime Dub Updates post: “Nice I love a simuldub.”

One commenter, ricklargaespada403, congratulated the cast and then added a wish that “some Union voice actors from Los Angeles and New York City joined this star-studded cast.”

On Facebook, under the page Anime Press’s “Overgeared has officially started streaming!” post, viewers who’d seen the first episode weighed in. “Episode 1 was actually amazing,” wrote Benoit Marchand. “First episode seemed good, I like it,” said John Fuhrman.

Not everyone is sold on Grid himself. “Not digging the main characters personality, hopefully he develops,” wrote Mark D. Jones, and Hector Lopez was blunter about the genre: “isekai slop number 5 million.” Readers of the webtoon offered some hope. “Overgeared is mid..in 1st few chapters but later it will be very good,” wrote _i_am_ashborn_ on Instagram.

Other dubs, other versions

This is the first screen version of Overgeared. Before the anime, the story existed as the web novel, the webtoon and a Nexon video game still in development, so there’s no earlier Overgeared series for Crunchyroll to have dubbed.

English isn’t the only dub, either. The Indian fan news page senpai_network posted on Instagram that episode 1 is streaming on Crunchyroll in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. “Guys hindi dub was good” and “watch yourself it’s peak,” replied adesh_gite302.

What it means for working voice actors

For actors, a same-day show is a different kind of job. Sessions tend to follow the episode’s arrival rather than the actor’s calendar, and there’s little room for a second pass. Fajardo’s 2022 point still stands: speed depends on everyone upstream getting their part done fast, and on people who care about the work.

If the first week’s comments are anything to go by, fans will be there for the dub on day one.
