A Veteran Philippine Voice Actor Lost a Big Brand Job to AI. Her Daughter Said Her Schedule Just Freed Up

Lindy Pellicer has voiced Philippine ads for 40 years. This week she told her family she had just lost a job to AI, and her daughter, the voice artist Inka Magnaye, put the message on Facebook. The brand is a big one. Nobody has named it.

The news came in the family group chat. “I just lost a voice over job to AI,” Pellicer wrote. Her daughter, a voice artist and content creator, shared a screenshot of the message on Facebook on Thursday, 8 October, under a single line: “My heart breaks for all the artists and creatives.”

Magnaye’s brother Renzo tried to console their mother by suggesting it was probably “a budget thing”, PhilNews reports. Pellicer thanked her daughter for the support. The same report says the loss hurt because she had worked with this client for many years, and that she stayed hopeful and trusted God to open new doors.

A big brand, and no name

Magnaye didn’t say which company it was. She did say how big. “To think this client is a big brand. Like, BIG,” she wrote. None of the reports we read says what the job was, which AI voice tool replaced Pellicer, or who the client is, and Voice Over Herald hasn’t been able to find out either.

She was fair about the decision itself. The Daily Tribune says she acknowledged that businesses make choices based on their own interests. Then she turned the question around and put it to the customers.

Where you spend your money

Magnaye reached for a line that had stuck with her. “Where you spend your money is a vote you cast toward the future you want,” she wrote, and then spoke straight to the companies. “So big brands with money, I ask you: Is that the future you want? A world where numbers, codes, and programs siphon the earth’s resources and take opportunities from actual human beings?”

Her point about savings is the one many working voice actors will recognise. “Sure, you save money. But the money you would have spent on the real people who would LOVE to work with you will end up spending this money back on you anyway,” she wrote, and added: “We are your customers, too.” The Daily Tribune carried the full post the next day.

“Lifeless” is her word for it

On quality she was blunt. “AI VOs sound lifeless, AI art feels lifeless. AI music sounds lifeless,” she wrote. “Why? Because AI is not alive. It can never replicate life.” She added that AI can be a tool but shouldn’t replace human talent. That is her opinion, and plenty of clients would disagree. It is also the case a working voice actor makes every time a job goes to a machine.

She ended with the line that travelled furthest. “If any brand or company out there wants to hire an amazing voice over, my mom’s schedule just freed up.”

A mock election ballot asking who speaks for the brand you buy, with two empty boxes, A person and A program, and Inka Magnaye's line that where you spend your money is a vote you cast toward the future you want.

Forty years of household names

Pellicer is no newcomer. Simpol.ph reports that over a 40-year career she lent her voice to household brands and to Philippine Airlines’ in-flight announcements in the 1990s, and that Inka later followed her into the airline job. When TV5’s morning show Good Morning Kapatid had the two women on the sofa together in 2023, the on-screen caption introduced Inka as the voice of Khaji Da, the scarab in DC’s Blue Beetle. The tracklist of her mother’s career, as far as the reports go, is below.

A cassette J-card for Lindy Pellicer, side A, listing Pond's, Nestlé, Johnson & Johnson and Philippine Airlines in-flight announcements, with a fifth track, a big brand in October 2026, struck through and stamped ERASED.

That is the family now at the centre of the story: a mother and daughter who have each spent a career being the voice people hear in the aisle, on the plane and in the ad break.

Not the first time she has said it

Simpol.ph notes that Magnaye has raised this before. In a 2023 interview she stressed the value of the “human element” in voice acting and urged industry leaders to set clear rules for AI.

She isn’t alone in saying it out loud. Voice Over Herald has followed a run of cases in the past weeks, from a late British narrator’s daughter who heard her father in an AI Christmas ad to Spanish-language dubbing actors speaking up about cloned voices. Most of them start the same way: one person, one post, and a long thread of colleagues replying.

What the story does and doesn’t show

It is one family, one job and one brand that hasn’t spoken. It doesn’t show how often long-standing clients in the Philippines are switching to AI voices, and no figure in any report we read says so. What it does show is the plain version of the worry. The person who lost the work had done it for decades, the client had hired her for years, and the explanation the family reached for was cost.

Philippine outlets from GMA Network to the Daily Tribune and Manila Bulletin picked the post up within a day. Magnaye, for her part, left an open invitation at the bottom of it.
