Four Voices From Frieren, Re:ZERO and Devils’ Crest Head to AFA Singapore. Two of Them Will Sign for Fans

Anime Festival Asia has added four Japanese voice actors to its Singapore show, which runs November 27 to 29 at Suntec. Tarusuke Shingaki and Shin-ichiro Miki, the voices of Genau and Revolte in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, will share a Day Stage panel. Satomi Arai, the voice of Beatrice in Re:ZERO, gets a panel and a meet and greet. Konomi Inagaki brings a lead role from a series that hasn’t premiered yet.

The festival announced the Frieren pair and Inagaki on its Facebook page on Monday and Tuesday, and Kadokawa announced Arai’s visit in a press release on Monday, as Anime News Network reported on October 21. The festival’s own guest pages now carry all four, with dates and stages.

For fans in Southeast Asia, it’s a chance to see Japanese voice casts in person without flying to Tokyo. AFA has been running since 2008 and describes itself as a convention that “unites Japanese pop culture fans across South East Asia.” This year’s Singapore edition fills Halls 401 to 406 at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the exhibition open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

Two Frieren voices, one stage

Shingaki voices Genau in Frieren. He was born in Okinawa and has been with the agency Mausu Promotion since 2001. Its profile of him lists a long run of anime parts, including Mirio Togata in My Hero Academia, Kariya Matou in Fate/Zero, Heshikiri Hasebe in Touken Ranbu and Togusa in the Ghost in the Shell: Arise films. He also dubs Western television: he’s Jin in the Japanese version of Lost and Chin Ho Kelly in Hawaii Five-0. One detail fans of The Prince of Tennis may like: the agency says he coached the Okinawan dialect for the stage musical.

Miki voices Revolte. Overseas fans may know his voice better than his name: in Japanese, he’s James of Team Rocket in Pokémon, Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Takumi Fujiwara in Initial D and Kisuke Urahara in Bleach. He was born in Tokyo in 1968 and is with the agency 81 Produce.

Their panel is on Saturday, November 28. AFA hasn’t posted a time yet, but Day Stage doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the show starts at 2 p.m. The festival’s pitch for the Day Stage is simple: “Deep dive into the world and work behind your favourite titles!” Frieren’s second season debuted on January 16, and Muse Asia streamed it as it aired in Japan. A third season is due in October 2027.

Beatrice’s voice, and a thousand others

Arai’s panel is also on Saturday, November 28, on the Day Stage. She voices the spirit Beatrice. On AFA’s guest page, her profile starts with a debut most fans won’t know: in 2000 she was the Japanese voice of Caitlin, the title character in the NHK broadcast of Caitlin’s Way.

Her other big role is Kuroko Shirai in A Certain Scientific Railgun. She has also voiced several characters across the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, including Fa Yuiry, Kikka, Mirai Yashima and HARO, the little ball robot. AFA says she is also the narrator of Sgt. Frog, which began airing in October, and calls her “truly a performer with ‘around a thousand voices.'”

Re:ZERO’s fourth season ran 19 episodes in two arcs. “The Loss Arc” began on April 8 and “The Recapture Arc” on August 12. Masahiro Shinohara directed it at WHITE FOX.

A lead role, three weeks into the job

Inagaki’s stop is a little different. Devils’ Crest, from Sword Art Online author Reki Kawahara, starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video on November 6, so her NEXT Stage panel on Friday, November 27 lands only three weeks into its run. She voices Sawa Ashihara, one of the protagonists. The festival’s synopsis of the show ends with one line: “This is a game, and it is real.”

Inagaki was born in Niigata Prefecture, and her AFA profile lists Serufu Yua in Do It Yourself!!, Copano Rickey in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Lilique Kadoka Lipati in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and Mina in My Wife Has No Emotion. The NEXT Stage sits inside the exhibition hall, so a basic exhibition ticket covers it.

Meeting them, and getting a signature

Two of the four have paid meet and greets. Inagaki’s is on Friday, November 27 at 5 p.m. in Room 331 on Level 3 of the convention centre, with a Q&A, an autograph on a shikishi board and a group photo. Arai’s is on Saturday at noon in the same room, with the same three parts. Both are listed at SGD 70, and each needs a separate festival ticket on top.

Arai’s session has one rule worth knowing before you pack. The meet and greet page says the shikishi is prepared by AFA and “Only the shikishi can be signed, no other personal items will be signed.” So the Beatrice figure can stay in your hotel room.

AFA hasn’t announced a meet and greet for Shingaki or Miki. Their only confirmed appearance so far is the Frieren panel.

The rest of the voices on the bill

The four join a weekend that’s already heavy on voice talent. Gakuto Kajiwara, the voice of Asta, has a Black Clover panel on the Day Stage and a Paradox Live appearance on the NEXT Stage, both on Sunday, plus a meet and greet. Taihi Kimura, the voice of Chihiro Rokuhira, joins a Kagurabachi panel on Sunday. Liyuu, Naomi Payton and Yuina from Love Live! Superstar!! take the Day Stage on Saturday, and Tatsumaru Tachibana, the voice of Grid, appears with director Ayako Kono for Overgeared.

Each night ends with a concert: composer Yuki Kajiura on Friday, a music festival on Saturday and a HoneyWorks and Vocaloid night on Sunday.

Who should go, and which ticket gets you in

The ticket matters, because the stages are split. An exhibition ticket gets you the hall and the NEXT Stage, which covers Inagaki’s panel. The Frieren and Re:ZERO panels are on the Day Stage, which needs an exhibition and stage ticket, sold for Saturday and Sunday only, or a concert ticket. In the super early bird phase, which opened on October 19, a one-day exhibition and stage ticket costs SGD 30 before booking fees. AFA says prices rise as each phase sells out, and every sale is final.

If you’re a Frieren fan, Saturday is your day: the panel, Arai’s Re:ZERO panel and the Love Live! cast are all on it. If you want an autograph, book the meet and greet early, since AFA sells every ticket while stocks last. And if you’re curious about Devils’ Crest, you’ll have three weeks of episodes to catch up on before Inagaki takes the stage on Friday.

AFA says more guests are still to be announced.
