What Can a New Voice Over Do To Get Noticed? – BE EMOTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE

I don’t think the client knows what he is doing.

Does he even speak English?

I have my own fees so let’s ditch this site.

I have been doing this for years so I know better.

These are just a few of the unnecessary, out of place and sometimes downright rude comments of professional voice over talents say about their clients or worse, spoken straight to them; and there are plenty more where they came from. Take note, the key word here is PROFESSIONAL.

Sadly, amazing talent doesn’t always come in a package with amazing attitude!

How can I as a new voice over talent continuously get the attention?

BE EMOTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE!

When you enter a competitive industry like the voice over industry, you should bring along plenty of respect, common decency and plain ethics into the game. And no matter how successful you get to be, you should never lose sight of these great human qualities.  As a newcomer, you should definitely wow your listeners and potential clients with your voice, and make them fans. But no matter how gifted you are, it is your positive attitude that will keep them as your followers.

It happened in real life…

A client books this amazingly talented voice over artist from a voice over casting site for several projects yearly. Then one day the client just decided to drop the talent and hire another one. The site later found out that the talent tried to low ball the client, offered his services outside the voice over casting site. One would think that the client would grab this opportunity to save a bit of money and keep the talent who has become the “voice” of his company for years, but no, the client would rather lose the voice over actor than be disrespectful to the voice over casting site that has brought them together.

“I was just turned off on how easy it was for him to turn against a company that has provided him a source of income, no matter big or small, for many years,” shared the client. “I run a small company, and every savings that we can get is helpful, but we value integrity more than money. I couldn’t let him continue to be the voice of my business if he doesn’t project the same values that we do.”

“Does he even speak English?” said a talent irritatingly to one support staff. The talent agent had to explain that the client is not a native English speaker but he can express himself better in written form.

“I have no patience for this! I just know he will be a problem!” With that the voice over actor dropped off the call and eventually cancelled on the client.

The client though immediately found a talent who was patient with him and who did not think of him any less for not being able to speak English well. And this talent ended up booking a 5-hour e-learning project and she has continuously worked with the client since.

“I have been doing this for years so I know better.” This was a message new explainer video company received from a talent they were auditioning. “I’m here to help you out. Your script doesn’t work. Trust me, I’ve done this many times before,” continued the talent.

“I know we are new but it doesn’t mean we don’t know what we are doing,” the client retorted. “We are open to ideas and willing to get help to make this project work better, but that help won’t come from you. Thank you!”

The fledgling explainer video company proactively warned their associates not to audition or hire the talent for any future projects.

Your talent and skill as a voice over actor can make people stop and listen, but what will make them hire you, continue to work with you, be loyal to you, and refer you to others is your pleasing personality.

Being emotionally attractive is the magnet that will pull people towards you every time. And these are not just people you aspire to work with, but also people who will be an inspiration to you, mentors who would wish to pass on great knowledge about the industry, peers who are willing to hold your hand as you learn the ins and outs of the business.

Emotionally attractive people attract equally attractive people, and an irreverent one pushes the right person away.

Have you ever worked with a talent who showed irreverence to a client?
